A Life Changed by Sleep Apnea Treatment…

“From always being tired to now feeling like I am wide awake!”

Carrie: I have a new lease on life

There was this sense of paranoia around me that I couldn’t seem to shake. I was positive my co-workers were suddenly making lunch and after work plans without me, when I was always included before. Whenever I wandered into a conversation, they seemed to suddenly excuse themselves. Why, all of a sudden, were they dodging me? I’ve done nothing that I’m aware of.

My new-found paranoia was soon confirmed when I realized my friends were doing the exact same thing. They quit inviting me to dinners and events and I knew they were making up excuses to not see me. Finally, I confronted my best friend and she let me in on the secret. My crankiness, my negativity, my temper – they were irritating everyone. No one wanted to be around me anymore. This problem was a lot bigger than I thought. I knew my sleep deficiency was affecting my commitment and my focus at work but I had no idea the impact it was having in my personal life.

After visiting Dr. Roubal, I feel like I have a brand new lease on life. I feel like now, I can take on the world. Not only am I finally able to sleep through the night, I feel like I have a completely new personality. I have control again – over my emotions and my emotions these days are overwhelmingly happy, positive, full of zest for life. Now, I have tolerance instead of worrying how I am going to make it through another sleep-deprived day. The best part? No one is avoiding me anymore. My friends and family and co-workers want to hang out with me again.

Mike: I never would have thought my dentist could solve my sleep problems.

“Sleeping like a baby.” I never understood that statement. I would hear it and think – what is that like? I wanted to know. How did it feel to go to bed in the evening and sleep through the entire night? What did it feel like to wake up completely revitalized and invigorated in the morning?

Thinking back as far as I could remember, I couldn’t honestly say the last time I woke up fully energized, ready to greet of the day. It never mattered if I was in bed for 5 or 9 hours, my first thought in the morning was always “how much longer before I can go back to bed?” I was always, indisputably, categorically exhausted in the morning. It was a devastating feeling that stayed with me all day. It became so familiar it was soon just my nature state of being.

I was visiting Dr. Roubal for my routine dental check-up when he inquired about my overall health. I started telling him how exhausted I was. He listened closely and instantly offered some treatment options and potential solutions. I never would have thought my dentist could solve my sleep problems. Never. After my treatment, I can now barely believe how long I lived in my sleep deprived state. Thinking back to how exhausted I was, it’s infuriating. I am forever grateful – thank you Dr. Roubal.

Shirley: I was angry and we both were sleep deprived

When I first met Richard, I thought he was the perfect man. Quickly, our relationship grew from casual dating to falling in love to getting married. Together, we built a magnificent life – travelling the globe, welcoming our three wonderful children, building our life together.

At the beginning of our marriage, Richard was an occasional snorer. It was nothing alarming or out of the ordinary. However, over the course of a few years, his snoring became progressively worse. We considered every option one could think of. We visited sleep centers, purchased over-the-counter solutions, tried homemade remedies, changed our sleep environment. We tried everything. Richard’s snoring became such an obstacle between us that more than once I weighed our marital options.

Increasingly, I became more and more bitter and I was beginning to resent our relationship. I was angry because of my sleep deprivation and both of us were irritable and bad-tempered. It wasn’t long before we began taking out our frustrations on one another. I felt deflated and didn’t know what else to do.

At my next visit, I just happened to mention the snoring issue to Dr. Roubal. He suggested what he thought could be causing this and he set up an appointment to see Richard the following week. Success! One visit was all it took for Richard to understand the cause of his snoring and to determine treatment options that were appropriate for him. Now we spend a lot less time talking about our marital problems and a lot more time devoted to one another.

Janelle: Sleepless in . . . Omaha

Every infomercial ever made and every old black-and-white movie. I could inform and advise you with specific details about either of these. What Humphrey Bogart said to Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca. With lightening speed and accuracy, which food chopper chops, slices and dices the fastest and with more ease. I could list vacuum cleaners that do more than clean your floors. Every night, all night, I was up. And the television was my only company.

Not only was television my only company but it was very quickly becoming my only friend. My lack of sleep was completely altering my personality and my family and friends no longer wanted to be around me. I was cranky and miserable and not too much fun to be with. My sleep disorder was affecting more than my night’s. It was disrupting my relationships, my personality and my life!

Getting to sleep was so difficult for me. I did everything I could think of from taking sleeping pills to trying home remedies to visiting my doctor. Nothing was alleviating the exhausting and frustrating cycle of insomnia.

After talking with Dr. Roubal, the difference in my life is beyond description. He not only understood my aggravation but he understood with such compassion and kindness. He provided me with explanations and more importantly – solutions! My sleepless nights are a thing of the past. Now there is only sleeping in Omaha.

Chris: My life was potentially saved by my dentist

From as far back as I could recall, I have had a snoring problem. Even back in my University days I was continually teased by roommates and sports teammates. The nickname of “Buzz” stuck all through college and to this day, some old buddies still refer to me as that.

I met, fell in love and married the lovely Shannon a few years after college. From the beginning she knew I was a snorer and we had many discussions around the subject. We’d talk about ‘cures’ to stop my snoring. We’d discuss how the sleep disruptions were impacting our lives and who I could visit for help. The conversations were endless and never led to a solution.

One night, Shannon abruptly shook me awake. She exclaimed that I had stopped breathing and she was so scared she was shaking. Right then and there we decided we had to look into this more seriously. There was something more going on than a simple snoring problem. Because that episode had left her so shaken, she began monitoring my breathing throughout the night. She was stunned to see the regularity of which I would stop breathing each and every night.

When Dr. Roubal commented on how tired I look at a routine check-up, I mentioned what was happening. Immediately he detected the problem. He immediately knew I was suffering from sleep apnea and he said if I left it untreated, it could lead to a potentially fatal disorder. He mentioned that habitual snoring can be a pre-cursor but he assured me he had treatment options and he promptly recommended one that worked for me. Now, I can happily say my snoring has significantly decreased and my sleep apnea is under control. I still find it ironic that I visited Dr. Roubal for my teeth cleaning and he potentially saved my life.
