Last month, Dr. Roubal joined a group of very select sleep dentists by adding certification from the American Board of Craniofacial Pain. He was named a Diplomate of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine, a relatively new certification that emphasizes the connection between the configuration of the jaw and the openness of the airway, which influences the severity of obstructive sleep apnea.
Taking Time to Earn Certifications
Earning certifications such as the one from the American Board of Craniofacial Pain takes time, which Dr. Roubal puts in outside his normal office hours. This certification, for example, requires a minimum of 50 hours of continuing education classes in sleep dentistry. It also requires a minimum of 10 hours overseeing sleep tests, with at least five hours being conducted in a sleep clinic.
Then he had to prepare case studies for a series of successful treatment outcomes to demonstrate that he could give the kind of results that patients needed to be relieved of sleep apnea symptoms and lower their attendant risks.
Finally, he had to take a written exam to demonstrate that he had the knowledge required to respond to a variety of patients’ needs.
Dr. Roubal’s Previous Certifications
Dr. Roubal’s certification by the American Board of Craniofacial Pain is just the most recent in a long line of distinguished certifications. In June of this year, Dr. Roubal was certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, one of only 180 Diplomates recognized since the program’s founding nearly a decade ago. He is also a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and is certified by the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorder Dentistry.
Dr. Roubal’s facilities have been accredited by the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. This means that his office, one of only 30 nationwide to receive this honor, is ably equipped to handle dental treatment of sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. They focus on standards of office layout, necessary equipment, the use of quality sleep apnea treatment appliances, and training of the staff in addition to the dentist.
