Poor sleep has been linked to all sorts of disturbing health problems that can shorten lives. We already know that long-term sleep difficulties can increase the risk of diabetes, dementia, cancer and heart disease. Now, a new study indicates that sleep issues may be especially harmful for women.
Research out of the University of California, San Francisco indicates that poor sleep patterns play “a significant role” in increasing inflammation in women. Appearing in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, the study looked at 700 female subjects, who already suffered from coronary heart disease. They then surveyed each participant to assess their sleeping patterns. In the end, the researchers found that sleep disturbances were associated with increased biomarkers, such as Fibrinogen, C-reactive protein and Interleukin-6: all of which are associated with inflammation.
Why the Increased Risk
Although they can’t say for sure, researchers believe estrogen may play a role in making women more vulnerable to health problems associated with sleeping difficulties. They also suggested that testosterone may actively protect male hearts from inflammation associated with sleep deprivation.
